Stocks are Mixed Amid Worries about Consumer Spending
Stocks are mixed amid weakness in both the housing and retail sectors. Earnings warnings from Target and Lowe's Companies are giving rise to worries that the credit squeeze and housing recession may be dampening consumer activity. The major indices are off session lows after existing home sales fell nearly in line with expectations, alleviating some fears that the credit crunch could have taken a bigger bite out of the housing market last month. A decline in oil prices is also having a negative impact on energy shares. In other economic news, consumer confidence fell to the lowest level in almost two years.
The Dow Jones industrial average was up 11.14 points, or 0.08 percent, at 13,770.20. The Standard & Poor's 500 index down 1.79 points, or 0.12 percent, at 1,515.94 and the Nasdaq composite index was up 5.17 points, or 0.19 percent, at 2,673.12.
Treasuries are higher pushing the yield on the 10-year Treasury note down to 4.58 percent from 4.62 percent late Monday.
The dollar is lower against major currencies. Gold prices are slightly lower.
Crude dropped below $80 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
