Nan Goldin Picture Owned by Elton John Pulled From Gallery Due to Child Pornography Controversy

A photograph shot by award-winning artists Nan Goldin and owned by musician Elton John was seized by Northumbria Police before it could be displayed at the Batltic Center for Contemporary Art in Northern England due to its possible violation of UK child pornography laws.

The photo, “Klara and Edda belly-dancing,” was on loan from rock legend Elton John who had purchased the picture for his private collection some time ago.

“Klara and Edda belly-dancing” shows two young girls, one of which is displayed with her legs spread apart. The photo had been pulled just before the exhibit featuring Goldin’s work was to start on Sept. 21.

Goldin rose to fame for her photographs in the late 1970s and early 80s that depicted drug users and the gay community. The 54-year-old photographer was presented with Sweden’s Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography earlier this year. She is currently living in New York.
