U.S. Navy Barracks shaped like swastika, sparks controversy

Controversy was sparked after a Colorado Navy Barracks building was discovered to resemble the Nazi symbol, swastika.

The buildings shape can only be seen on Google Earth, as there are no military or civilian flights that provide a top view of the building. The barracks were built in the 1960’s and the shape was recognized then, but Navy officials decided not to take action since the shape couldn’t be recognized from the ground.

People recently directed the Navy’s attention to the issue on blogs and websites after the building was seen on Google Earth. Navy officials listened to the public and have designated $600,000 to make changes to the barracks so the building no longer shapes a swastika symbol.

“We don’t want to be associated with something as symbolic and hateful as a swastika,” said deputy public affairs officer Scott Sutherland.
