Curfew in Concepcion Lifted as Chilean Troops Try to Maintain Order Following Earthquake

The curfew that had been set up in Concepcion following Saturday’s devastating 8.8 magnitude earthquake has reportedly been lifted as Chilean troops have now been placed in the region to deter further looting in the country’s second city.

Looting has been a major problem in Concepcion as people have not only targeted grocery stores for basic necessities but high-end electronics and clothing stores as well. As the city still lacks electricity securing those stores has been difficult and because of that a curfew had been ordered.

Saturday’s quake has killed more than 720 people and rescue operations are still being conducted to free people trapped under homes and buildings. Along with the rescue crews that have flooded Concepcion Chilean President Michelle Bachelet ordered 14,000 troops to the hard-hit region after several people were arrested for looting on Monday.

Addressing the issue of looters Bachelet stated “Our principle objective is to go and help people tackle the emergency in the disaster zone. I want them (looters) to understand this and that they'll receive rigorous legal action. We will not tolerate such actions.”

Officials have organized delivery of aid from Santiago to Concepcion to provide food and clean water to the hundreds of thousands left homeless but damage to roads and power cuts has made the process difficult.
