Man arrested on St. Johns University campus for rifle carried in bag

St. Johns University had a scare Wednesday after a man with a rifle in a bag was apprehended. It is unclear if the man was a student.

“At this time, the NYPD has a heavy presence on the Queens campus and are conducting an extensive and thorough search of all buildings and facilities. Students have been instructed to stay inside their classrooms and buildings until further notice,” said a statement from the university.

No injuries were reported in the incident and the school took extra precautionary measures to make sure students were safe. Students were advised to stay in classrooms and buildings until they were told it was safe to come out. St. Johns University also used a new emergency call system and notified students via text and phone messages. Security guards were placed in all buildings.

The man’s rifle was apprehended and he was taken into police custody. A search of the entire campus was also conducted.

Kevin Su, a student on the campus, said the Virginia Tech massacre was not mentioned but it was on everyone’s mind. “I think it’s basically on everyone’s mind. It doesn’t need to be said outright,” Su said.
