A key militant leader who kept close ties to al-Qaeda and the Pakistani Taliban has been killed in a U.S. drone attack in North Waziristan.
According to reports Qari Mohammad Zafar, head of the Sunni Muslim extremist group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, was killed in a strike on February 24. He had been wanted by the United States and Pakistani authorities over the attack on the U.S. consulate attack in Karachi in March 2006.
Qari Mohammad Zafar had been the leader of the banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi since 2005 and was said to have had close ties with the Taliban’s chief trainer of suicide bombers.
Lashkar-e-Jhangvi has been blamed for propagating sectarian violence inside Pakistan and is also believed to have played a role in the murder of U.S. reporter Daniel Pearl in 2002.
