Drugs are related to crime in many ways. Both directly; through possession, manufacturing and distributing as well as indirectly through the effects they produce that cause users to commit crimes in the first place. One of the most difficult crimes for the average person to understand is murder. According to the White House Drug Policy 29.4% of federal inmates and 26.8% of state prison inmates were under the influence when they committed murder.
In addition, drug addiction and trafficking have been the source of violent crime for many years. Drugs still remain one of the main factors leading to the rise in the total number of all homicides and account for an average of 15,000 to 20,000 deaths per year.
There is one effective way to stop addiction-related, violent crime including murder and any and all crimes related to substance abuse; effective drug rehab treatment. Wherever effective treatment programs are put in, they reduce the amount of drug related crimes. One program that has had such success is called Narconon. Narconon turns addicts around before they get on this path to violent crime and helps to get them fully rehabilitated.
One of the key tools that Narconon uses to help rehabilitate addicts is The Way To Happiness course. During this part of the program Narconon clients gain a common sense guide to living where they learn about things such as “set a good example” and “be worthy of trust.”
The Way To Happiness also teaches addicts a very basic moral precept of, “do not murder” and compares this to the concept "of do not kill" and helps them see how their understanding of these two concepts makes living an ethical life very simple. Clients that complete this part of the Narconon curriculum have a new outlook on life and get onto a moral and ethical road.
Some transgressions, like murder, committed while under the influence of drugs, cannot be undone, but through effective treatment they are being prevented.
The Narconon program has been around since 1966 and was actually founded by a prison inmate named William Benitez. Benitez, who was a heroin addict for most of his life, came upon a book in the prison library by American Author and Humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard called Fundamentals of Thought. Through the technology learned in this book Benitez stopped using drugs permanently and started helping others in the prison to overcome their addictions through a pilot program he ran with some inmates.
Narconon grew and today they operates more than 140 centers in 50 different countries that achieve a more than 70% success rate for permanent recovery from addiction.
