Barry Bonds said farewell to the San Francisco Giants Wednesday in his last game with the team. He has spent 15 years with the club and the organization decided to part ways with the seven-time NL MVP.
After missing 10 games because of a sprained big right toe that is worse than initially thought, Bonds was in the starting lineup and batting in his regular cleanup spot last night. But he isn't scheduled to play this weekend in Los Angeles.
Bonds broke Hank Aaron's career home record on Aug. 7 in San Francisco. The ball, his 756th home run, was voted to have an asterisk placed next to it by fashion designer Marc Ecko, who bought the ball on an online auction. The asterisk is to denote the steroids scandal Bonds was involved in.
Bonds also broke the single-season home run record in 2001 with 73 home runs.
The end of a history-making era for the 43-year-old home run king and 14-time All-Star in the very city where he used to bounce around the clubhouse as his late father, Bobby, and godfather, Hall of Famer Willie Mays, got ready for games. He was also raised in the San Francisco area.
Bonds has not yet retired, so it is expected that he will play with another franchise next season.
