Stocks Move Higher Despite Disappointing Home Sales:
Stocks have brushed aside midmorning uncertainty and are modestly higher as an unexpected drop in jobless claims offsets a larger-than-forecast decline in new home sales. The Commerce Department reported that sales of new homes plunged 8.3 percent in August to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 795,000 units, the lowest level in seven years. Investor sentiment is that the weak housing data will give the Federal Reserve another reason to cut interest rates. KB Home reported a huge loss and provided a grim view of the housing market, Paychex offered soft guidance, and Bed Bath & Beyond authorized a stock buyback program. Additionally, Microsoft reported strong first-day sales of its 'Halo 3' videogame. In other economic news, 2Q final GDP was revised slightly lower.
The Dow Jones industrial average was up 19.18, or 0.14 percent, to 13,897.33. The Standard & Poor's 500 index was up 3.79, or 0.25 percent, to 1,529.21, and the Nasdaq composite index was up 6.81, or 0.25 percent, to 2,705.84.
Treasuries are unchanged and the yield on the 10-year Treasury remained at 4.62 percent, the same as late Wednesday.
The dollar is mixed against major currencies. Gold prices are slightly higher.
