BET’s Hip Hop vs America Creates Heated Debates Among T.I. Nelly, Al Sharpton And More

BET aired their ‘Hip Hop vs America’ series on Tuesday September 25, 2007. The panel consisted of Rappers, Hip Hop artists, Professors, and other Public Officials.

The Hip Hop debate centered around the 'ongoing battle' of hip hop music and the affect it has on the African American community. Many issues were discussed concerning Hip Hop and the developing culture of music, in terms of the lyrics and video content that some of today’s hottest rappers are using to sell music.

A primary example used in the Hip Hop vs America debate included rap star Nelly’s ‘Tip Drill’ video which was released in 2003 The video became extremely controversial among students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), black community leaders and popular cultural commentators and other activists for its explicit depiction of women as sexual objects.

During the televised one hour debate rapper T.I., Nelly, and Master P defended the state of hip hop and how their type of music has nothing to do with corrupting children in today’s society.

Hip Hop vs America was recently aired on the BET Network this week, but the topic of hip hop music and the black community has also been discussed on other talk shows including, Oprah and BET’s Rap City.
