Van Halen Concert in Charlotte Marks David Lee Roth Return after 22 Year Absence

It has been 22 years since David Lee Roth fronted Van Halen and on Thursday night fans at the Charlotte Bobcat Arena were the first to see the eccentric one heading the group’s highly anticipated tour.

Roth left the band to pursue a solo career in April 1985 and over the next two decades the two sides rarely spoke. While Van Halen continued to enjoy commercial success with Sammy Hagar as their frontman, Roth stumbled and never matched the stardom he reached while playing with Van Halen.

After a few brief reunion shows original members Eddie Van Halen and Alex Van Halen began planning a tour that would include Eddie’s son Wolfgang Van Halen on bass (replacing Michael Anthony) and David Lee Roth as lead singer. Originally slated to cover 25 dates the tour was extended to 38 after ticket sales indicated the need for more shows.
