Italian Police Arrest Seven on Suspicion of Trafficking Arms to Iran

An investigation carried out by Italy’s anti-terror unit has led to the arrest of two Iranians and five Italians who are suspected of trafficking weapons to Iran.

According to Italian authorities the two Iranians worked for the government of Iran and had been moving weapons and armament systems into the country, violating a UN arms embargo on Iran.

The investigation, dubbed “Sniper,” was a nine-month operation that involved not only Italy’s anti-terror unit but Swiss police as well because one of the suspects lived in Bern.

Iran has been accused by the West of attempting to develop nuclear weapons, leading to calls from the international community to impose tougher sanctions against the country. Iran has insisted those accusations are unfounded and their nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.
