Head of Russia’s Olympic Committee Resigns Following Disastrous Winter Games

Less than one week after the 2010 Winter Olympics closed in Vancouver the head of Russia’s Olympic Committee has resigned following the country’s worst Winter Olympic showing in its history.

On Monday Russian President Dmitry Medvedev called for Leonid Tyagachyov to step down as head of the country’s Olympic Committee after Russia managed just 15 medals in Vancouver, three of which were gold.

Tyagachyov was seen as a major influence in helping Russia earn the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi but that held little weight for Medvedev who urged the former sports minister, along with other senior sports officials, to resign or “we will help them.”
