The small volcanic island of Jabal al-Tair, located 70 miles off the coast of Yemen in the Red Sea, was covered in lava and magma after an eruption occurred yesterday killing at least four soldiers.
While the island has no civilian population it is home to Yemen military installations used by their navy. According to the AFP four soldiers were burned to death and nine soldiers are still unaccounted for in the aftermath of the eruption.
NATO has sent in a fleet of ships to help try and locate the missing soldiers.
The last time Jabal al-Tair, translated to mean bird mountain, erupted was in 1883.
