Dow tops 14,000 in Anticipation of Fed Rate Cut:

Investors have brushed aside profit warnings from Citigroup and UBS, and are sending the Dow Jones industrial average into record territory after a weaker than expected report on manufacturing raised hopes that the Federal Reserve will lower interest rates later this month. The Nasdaq Composite is flirting with a multi-year high and the Dow Jones Industrial is back at the 14,000 level amid strength in techs and industrials. The market shot higher after the Institute for Supply Management said its index of manufacturing activity registered at 52.0 in September, below forecasts for a 53.0 reading. A reading of 50 or more indicates expansion, while below 50 indicates contraction. This followed mixed economic readings released in recent weeks that might prompt policymakers to shore up the economy with another cut when it meets at the end of the month

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 93.72, or 0.67 percent, to 13,989.35. The Dow briefly passed 14,008.70, surpassing its closing record of 14,000.41, set in mid-July. The Standard & Poor's 500 index was up 9.00, or 0.59 percent, to 1,535.75; and the Nasdaq composite index was up 17.09, or 0.63 percent, to 2,718.59.

Treasuries are higher and the yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 4.56 percent, from 4.59 percent late Friday.

The dollar was mixed against major currencies. Gold prices are slightly higher.
A barrel of light, sweet crude fell 89 cents to $80.77 on the New York Mercantile Exchange. This extended last week's decline on concerns that oil market fundamentals do not support recent high prices.
