Man Tries to Carry Explosives into U.S. Embassy in Austria

Austrian police arrested a 42-year-old Bosnian man shortly after he tried to enter the U.S. Embassy with a backpack full of explosives. The man walked through the front doors of the building located in Vienna but quickly fled when the contents of the backpack triggered the metal detector.

The man then dumped his bag and ran but was apprehended by police. Contents inside the bag included two grenades, nails and screws.

According to Doris Edelbacher, a spokeswoman for the Austrian Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, “There were a lot of nails in that bag. Had it exploded, it would have had an enormous shrapnel effect.”

Edelbacher also told The Associated Press that the man’s bag had contained Islamic literature.
