Erik Prince, founder of Blackwater, to testify in court on military use of security firms in Iraq

Blackwater USA has been in the center of controversy after the company has been accused of killing 11 unarmed Iraqi civilians on September 16. The private security firm has 156 cases in which they fired first, raising the question of excessive and unnecessary force, and giving them the reputation of being quick to draw guns.

The Iraq Interior Ministry banned the company from operating in Iraq and say they will prosecute those involved in the ‘crime.’ Blackwater protects State Department personnel in Iraq.

Blackwater was put under investigation and the founder and CEO of the company, Erik Prince is scheduled to testify Tuesday morning. A hearing is being held on the use of private contractors by United States military. The State Department instructed Blackwater to not testify with out its permission, but retracted the request after Republican Henry Waxman and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice fought over the issue.

Waxman alleges the State Department has protected Blackwater in the past and helps them cover up the deaths of innocent Iraqis. The department allegedly helped Blackwater cover up the death of an Iraqi guard, who was shot by a drunken Blackwater employee, by paying the family of the guard $15,000. Blackwater was also allowed to write the report about the Sept. 16 shooting, and they did not mention the deaths of the civilians.
