Good Indoor Air Quality "IAQ" = Improved Health & Productivity

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that poor indoor air quality costs business about $60 billion in lost productivity, and perhaps even more when associated health care and litigation costs are included. While most of us know that outdoor air pollution can be detrimental to our health, very few are aware that indoor air pollution can be equally damaging. Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is of particular concern since most of us spend a substantial time indoors.

While most of us know that outdoor air pollution is detrimental to our health, very few are aware that indoor air pollution can be equally damaging. IAQ is of particular concern since most of us spend up to 90% of our time indoors, be it at our office, home or other commercial buildings and establishments.

Reports of indoor illness, commonly known as the “sick building syndrome” (SBS) or “building related illness” (BRI), that may be associated with a variety of indoor environmental pollutants is of epidemic proportions. IAQ complaints can be difficult to diagnosis due to the number and variety of possible sources and causes and varying individual sensitivities when exposed to the pollutant.

Good indoor air quality can lead to improved productivity at the workplace. On the other hand, poor indoor air quality will cause productivity to drop because of comfort problems, short and long term debility and sickness.

EPA and other organizations have postulated that indoor levels of air pollutants can be 2-5 times higher, and occasionally 100 times higher than outdoor levels.

What are the benefits of Good IAQ?

In some cases IAQ can dramatically increase productivity and reduce absences from illnesses. The capital expenditure and running costs incurred in employing effective IAQ can easily be recouped by relatively small increases in productivity. A recent US study shows the large savings that can be potentially made by a relatively small investment. The authors of this study concluded: "Given the dominance of labor costs, even a modest increase in productivity could justify substantial capital expenditures to improve indoor air quality." Another study has revealed that savings can also be made by reduced absenteeism. Good IAQ is not only a way of increasing the working productivity. In buildings where IAQ is strictly controlled it can have a beneficial impact on health. A high quality and properly maintained HVAC system will filter out particles that can induce hay fever and asthma attacks. The result is a much lower incidence of these ailments and a less tiring environment to work in.
