The La Jolla landslides in San Diego, California have caused more than 100 homes to be evacuated, many of which carried values in excess of a million dollars along a three-lane road.
On Wednesday residents in the La Jolla community saw first hand the damaging effects of a landslide as a massive section of Soledad Mountain Road was swallowed when the earth gave way underneath.
Residents in more than 100 homes were forced to evacuate until officials could determine the safety and condition of the area. At least nine of those homes are considered too unsafe to reenter while 27 are in fair enough shape to allow for their owners to return for necessities but not to stay in.
La Jolla mayor Jerry Sanders declared a state of emergency and has appealed to the state as well as the federal government for assistance.
