Stocks Are Unchanged Amid the Release of Weak Economic Data

Stocks are trading flat after the release of a bigger-than-expected rise in weekly jobless claims, and the biggest drop in factory orders since January. The Labor Department said jobless claims rose 16,000 to 317,000 in the week ended Sept. 29, a bigger jump than analysts anticipated. Weaker economic data bolsters the case for further rate cuts by the Federal Reserve, which lowered rates last month for the first time in four years. In other economic news, the Commerce Department reported that orders to U.S. factories fell in August by 3.3 percent, slightly worse than expected and the largest amount in seven months.  

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 7.80, or 0.06 percent, to 13,960.25. The Standard & Poor's 500 index was up 0.75, or 0.05 percent, to 1,540.3, and the Nasdaq composite index was down 4.80, or 0.18 percent, to 2,724.63.

Treasuries are unchanged and the yield on the 10-year Treasury note was 4.55 percent, the same as late Wednesday.

The dollar was mixed against major currencies. Gold prices are lower.

A barrel of light, sweet crude was down 62 cents to $79.32 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
