Larry Craig Request to Withdraw Guilty Plea Denied

Larry Craig’s attempt to withdraw his guilty plea in connection to an encounter in a men’s restroom at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport was denied on Thursday.

Judge Charles Porter found that Craig’s admission to guilt was made “accurately, voluntarily and intelligently” and the senator from Idaho would not be allowed to withdraw his plea.

Senator Craig had been arrested back in June after a plainclothes policeman had been assigned to investigate complaints surrounding lewd conduct in a men’s bathroom at the airport. According to the arresting officer Craig was arrested for making sexual advances while he was in a stall next to him. In the police report the officer stated that Craig had tapped his toes and waved his hands beneath the divider of the two stalls.

After it was made public that Craig pled guilty the senator had a change of heart and said “I overreacted and made a poor decision, I chose to plead guilty to a lesser charge in hopes of making it go away. I did not seek any counsel… That was a mistake, and I deeply regret it….”

Initially Craig said that he would resign from the Senate at the end of September if he could not reverse his guilty plea but he has since said that he would remain until he has explored all his legal options.
