Positive job reports for February helped drive the Dow Jones Industrial Index back into the black for the year, on Thursday. All three major U.S. indexes closed for the day with moderate gains after optimistic unemployment filings appeared to encourage investors. Dramatic drops in pending home sales pushed the market lower, but not enough to negate morning enthusiasm.
For the day, the Dow gained 47.38, or 0.5 percent, to 10,444.14. The Standard & Poor's 500 index inched up 4.18 points, or 0.4 percent, to 1,122.97 while the Nasdaq composite index tacked 11.63 points, or 0.5 percent, to 2,292.31.
