Bernie Scheffler, frontrunner in the campaign for Fort Worth City Council District 9, today challenged his opponents to fight fair in their quest for city council. Mr. Scheffler followed his challenge with a pledge to campaign with integrity and respect for his opponents regardless of their differences on important issues like Urban Gas Drilling.
“I want to serve the people of our district with honor and integrity,” said Mr. Scheffler. “I believe that one measure of my propensity to be a credible representative in city government is my deportment during this campaign. I’ve run a clean campaign from the start and will continue to do so. But today I challenge my opponents to do the same.”
Mr. Scheffler offered specific guideless for a clean campaign. He promises to:
“I consider these guidelines to be part of an unwritten code of ethics which govern community elections,” said Mr. Scheffler. “We’re not running for senate here. We’re running for the right to represent the voice of our neighbors in city government. It’s important that our neighbors come to understand what we truly believe in without being swayed by win-at-any-cost campaign tactics. I hope my opponents will join me in cleaning up this campaign.”
Mr. Scheffler’s clean campaign challenge is part and parcel of his campaign philosophy. For example, Mr. Scheffler is the only candidate who has pledged a “no call” campaign. He also strives to keep campaign contributions in the neighborhood by working with District 9 businesses to produce his campaign materials. “My yard signs are proudly printed right here in District 9 by Big Picture on
Mr. Scheffler is also committed to a true grassroots campaign, seeking small contributions from residents rather than large contributions from special interests. And he advocates complete access and visibility in local government. “I’ve worked very hard on my campaign web site,” said Mr. Scheffler, “because I think it’s important that people know exactly where I stand and find it easy to contact me. My entire detailed platform is available on my web site. I challenge my opponents to do the same. This is not a popularity contest. This is an election to determine which individual truly best represents the interests of District 9 residents.”
