Iraqi government finds Blackwater accountable for 17 civilian deaths

The Iraqi government lead an investigation into the September 16 shooting that left 17 Iraqi civilians dead and 27 injured. The United States security firm Blackwater USA was at the heart of the investigation as the Iraqi government believed they opened fire without cause.

A spokesman for the Iraqi government, Ali al-Dabbagh, said the Blackwater convoy was not attacked, as Blackwater claims. Blackwater says their convoy was shot at by civilians and Iraqi policeman. Dabbagh says the convoy wasn’t attacked at all, “not even by a stone.”

Dabbagh says the security firm, which was founded by Erik Prince, committed an “intentional murder that needed to be called to account according to the law.”

The September 16 shooting was one of six that have raised questions about Blackwater and been brought to the attention of the American government.
