A luxury high-rise under construction in Jersey City, New Jersey was ablaze late Monday night leading police to evacuate nearby residents and shut down roads surrounding the city’s financial district.
The fire started at the 77 Hudson Street address marked for a luxury condominium building slated for opening in 2009. According to firefighters the blaze began in an elevator well situated between the 17th and 18th floors and quickly spread as it fed on lumber that was to be used for framing sections of the buildings upper floors.
While firefighters were able to get the blaze under control just before 1:00 am it could have been sooner had the building’s water supply been activated higher than the 14th floor. The firefighters had arrived on the scene shortly before 9:00 pm.
Damage to the building was mostly limited to the upper floors and the building’s steel and concrete construction is not believed to be in danger of collapsing.
