With Greece struggling to bring stability to its financial sector and recover from a devastating economic collapse German Chancellor Angela Merkel has vowed to provide support for the country yet stopped short of offering any financial assistance.
Merkel pledged to “stand helpfully by Greece’s side” but is well aware of the attitude of most Germans who do not support the idea of using taxpayer money to bail out a country that intentionally hid its massive debt in order to secure favorable loans.
Merkel is meeting with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou who is said to be hoping to secure a commitment of support if his country can’t raise money from the markets. The Berlin meeting might not go in that direction though as Merkel has assured Germans that she will not violate the EU’s Maastricht Treaty that outlines a “no bail-out clause.”
The language was even stronger from Germany’s Economy Minister Rainer Bruederle who said the government “does not intend to give a cent” in financial aid.
