Torre Undecided About Future With New York Yankees

Joe Torre's future as manager of the New York Yankees is still undecided, according to Yankees GM Brian Cashman. The 67-year old Torre also hasn't said whether he wants to return or retire either.

Although the club was recently eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Cleveland Indians, Torre took the Yankees to 12 consecutive playoffs. They have been eliminated three straight years in the first round.

Regarldess of the recent loss, many people are behind Torre, from rival AL managers Terry Francona and Eric Wedge to presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Bench coach Don Mattingly is mentioned as a possible replacement along with Joe Girardi and Tony La Russa.

Torre led New York to four World Series titles from 1996-2000 in his first five years as manager but none since. He is second to Joe McCarthy on the club's career wins list with a 1,173-767 regular-season record as Yankees manager.

Owner George Steinbrenner, who is in Florida at his vacation home, said that nothing has been decided yet.

Third baseman Alex Rodriguez is also trying to figure out which team he will play for next year, whether it is the Yankees or another club. The Torre situation could have a big effect on Rodriguez' plans.
