Philippine Army Patrol Ambushed by Rebels, 11 Soldiers Killed, 7 Wounded

At least eleven soldiers belonging to the Philippine army have been killed and seven more left injured after their reconnaissance platoon on the island of Mindoro was ambushed by rebels.

 

According to reports as many as 60 guerrillas belonging to the New People’s Army opened fire on the patrol as they were positioned outside Mansalay township. The three-hour gun battle included casualties on both sides but the number of rebels dead has not been released.

 

The troops had been sent to the area to stop the communist rebels from extorting money from candidates taking part in May’s elections.
