Tracy McHugh sentenced in ‘Munchausen by Proxy’ case

Tracy McHugh was sentenced to 27 months in a Florida prison in a Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy case. The Scottish born mother moved to the United States 20 years ago and during that time subjected her five children to unnecessary hospital tests and procedures.

McHugh is convicted of child abuse, but was never charged with the death of a baby found buried in her back yard. The baby was discovered in September of last year, but McHugh could not be charged because a cause of death could not be determined.

Doctors say McHugh suffers from Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy, which means caretakers induce injury or illness on those they are caring for in order to gain attention.

McHugh’s two school age children are in the custody of her sister-in-law, one baby was given up for adoption, and the other is now an adult. McHugh is pregnant with her sixth child but will not be able to keep the baby after it is born. After serving her sentence in Florida, she will be deported back to the UK.
