Third Body Found in Deadly Los Angeles Freeway Tunnel Accident

An accident involving at least six big rig trucks and several passenger vehicles in a Los Angeles freeway tunnel north of Los Angeles has continued to keep firefighters and rescue workers searching for survivors.

At this point three bodies have been recovered, two adult males and a child, but there is a fear that several more victims will be found under the debris that has shut down the tunnel.

The accident occurred on the southbound truck tunnel of Interstate 5 Friday night and left firefighters working throughout the night to control a blaze that sent passengers running from their cars as the flames tore through the tunnel.

It is believed that two big rigs collided on a rain-slickened stretch of the tunnel and burst into flames. As the traffic behind the big rigs continued to pour into the tunnel and slam into each other the flames quickly spread. At one point both ends of 550-foot tunnel were spitting out flames.

Highway officials hoped to have the tunnel opened by Tuesday but that could be hampered by the large amount of debris and the need to ensure the tunnel is safe for the public.
