Alec Kessler, a University of Georgia star basketball player, died suddenly on Saturday at the age of 40. Kessler was the captain of the Bulldog’s SEC championship basketball team in 1990. He was also named the SEC player of the year in 1990. Kessler went on to graduated from the Emory University School of Medicine and became an orthopedic surgeon.
Kessler was playing in a father-son charity basketball game on Saturday when he suddenly collapsed on court. Kessler was treated at the scene by a doctor and a nurse, but remained unresponsive to all attempts of reviving him. He was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead upon arrival.
“They’re not sure if it was a heart attack but it was definitely heart related,” said former Georgia coach Hugh Durham. Kessler was survived by his wife and two sons.
