Iraq’s parliamentary elections have been marred by multiple attacks across the country, leaving at least 35 people dead and scores more injured.
Despite a heavy security presence throughout the country two buildings were destroyed by mortars in the capital of Baghdad while a number of attacks in other cities were reported.
Even with the violence voters wouldn’t turn down the opportunity to cast their ballots as long lines at polling stations were standard. That violence included the destruction of a residential building in Baghdad that left 25 people dead.
Much of the violence was being pinned on Sunni extremists who were attempting to stop other Sunnis from voting. Those attacks were consistent with a pre-election pledge from Islamic militants who vowed to disrupt the voting process.
Iraqis were taking to the poll to fill the 325 seats of parliament, with about 19 million eligible voters expected to turn out at one of the 50,000 polling stations spread across the country.
Heading into Sunday’s vote Prime Minister Nouri Maliki looked to hold a clear advantage in retaining power with his Shia-led coalition.
