Voters in Switzerland overwhelmingly rejected a proposal that would have provided state-funded lawyers for animals in court cases.
While animal rights groups had argued that there had been several cases of cruelty going unpunished nearly 70 percent of the voters turned back the proposal. Switzerland is said to have some of the strictest animal welfare legislation and voters did not appear willing to foot the bill for the proposed state-funded lawyers.
Animal rights groups have been fighting to give animals representation in court, alleging several cases of cruelty had been dismissed because the animals had no one to argue their case.
