International Drug Smuggling Ring at JFK Airport, 10 Airline Workers Suspected

Among the 18 people arrested Tuesday for their suspected involvement in an international drug smuggling ring, 10 were airline workers employed at New York’s JFK International Airport.

All 18 of the arrested individuals appeared in federal court to answer to charges related to smuggling and distribution.

It is believed that the drug operation was using JFK as a means of transporting large quantities of drugs originating from the Dominican Republic. The drugs were stored in luggage aboard flights that were handled by several airline workers that ensured the packages remained out of the sight of authorities.

The man at the center of the allegations is Henry Polanco who is believed to have been handling the suppliers in the Dominican Republic. Polanco enlisted employees of Delta Airlines, American Airlines and the food-service company Aramark to keep the drugs from being discovered.

The bust was the culmination of a two-year investigation by the DEA that netted more than $2 million in cocaine, ecstasy and heroin.
