‘Superbug’ is causing deadly cases of MRSA and staph infections

A recent government report has claimed more than 90,000 Americas every year are infected by a drug resistant “superbug.” Doctors said the ‘bugs’ are increasing at a rapid pace. The superbugs ”have been linked to pediatric ear infections, staph infections, and MRSA.

Researchers say an ‘astounding’ number of MRSA cases will increase. The reports say MRSA may cause more deaths in one year than HIV and AIDS.

The bug, which was previously associated with hospital infections, is now spreading through communities. A new strain of Streptococcus pneunomiae, which is a bacterium that causes pediatric ear infections and pneumonia in the elderly, has been discovered and there is no vaccine for it.

“This is a superbug that we’re reporting for the first time – and this is frightening,” said University of Rochester professor Michael Pichichero. He has named the new strain Legacy.

Eleven cases of Legacy have been confirmed so far. Dr. Lorry Rubin says there is no need for alarm yet as there is so few cases.
