Sony Corp. has cut the price of their 80-gigabyte PlayStation 3 and essentially eliminated their 60-gigabyte console in an attempt to compete with Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 and Nintendo Corp.’s Wii for the holiday dollar.
PlayStation 3 will now be available for $499, down from the $599 price tag that it carried when first introduced.
In another move to attract more customers, Sony Corp will make available a lower-end model of the PlayStation 3 with a 40-gigabyte drive. Unlike the 80-gigabyte drive, the low-end model will not be able to play games that were made for the PlayStation 2. The 40-gigabyte PlayStation 3 will be on shelves Nov. 2 and retail for $399.
Since its launch last November, Sony Corp. has sold over 5 million units of the PlayStation 3.
