Strong Earthquake Hits Eastern Turkey, at least 57 Dead

A strong 6-0-magnitude earthquake rocked eastern Turkey, leveling buildings and homes and killing at least 57 people while leaving several more trapped under debris.

Rescue crews are still searching through rubble to find survivors in the Elazig province but several of the buildings in the surrounding villages were completely destroyed. One of those villages was Okcular where at least 17 people were confirmed dead and as many as 30 homes lay in ruins.

Officials have said a number of the injuries suffered from the quake came as panicked people jumped from windows or balconies.

The 6.0 quake has been followed by more than 40 aftershocks, leaving residents fearful of returning to their homes. To assist these people the Turkish Red Crescent has set up tents and are distributing food to those affected.
