6.0 Earthquake Hits Turkey, At Least 50 Dead

An early morning earthquake in Turkey on Monday left more than 50 people dead and about 70 others injured. The 6.0 magnitude earthquake hit the Elazig province at 4:32 a.m.

The temblor was located near the meeting point of two major fault lines – the Northern Anatolian Fault and the East Anatolian Fault – according to geologists. Dozens of aftershocks were felt in the region in the hours after the quake.

The village of Okcular was the worst hit.. Ali Saglam, deputy governor of Elazig, said search and rescue teams are searching the rubble.

"According to the information that we got from the technical teams on the ground, there shouldn't be anyone left in the rubble by now. But the search and rescue operations are continuing,” Saglam said. “Most of the houses that were demolished in the villages are not cement houses. ... Other buildings, such as schools, were not destroyed.”
