Getting to the top of the AP Top 25 college basketball rankings hasn’t been as hard as holding on to that spot as the Syracuse Orange became the latest to lose their number one ranking after falling to the Louisville Cardinals over the weekend. That loss moved the Kansas Jayhawks back to #1, a spot they’ve held multiple times this year, while also pushing the Kentucky Wildcats up a spot to #2 in the rankings.
Syracuse fell to #3 this week but are still a favorite to pick up a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, joining Kansas, Kentucky and the #4 Duke Blue Devils as top seeds in their regional bracket.
Kansas is hitting on all cylinders right now after blowing out Kansas State and Missouri this past week. The Jayhawks are a clear favorite to win the Big 12 conference tournament and earn the overall number one seed come tournament time.
Kentucky is also playing at an elevated level with convincing wins over Georgia and Florida. While there have been questions about experience there is no questioning the talent the Wildcats possess.
Even with their loss the Syracuse Orange are being picked by many to win another national championship. A suffocating defense could cause a number of problems for opponents in the tournament and they have enough offensive firepower to keep them from relying on any one player to get points.
That may be the case with Duke as well, as the Blue Devils have three offensive guns that will keep defenses from concentrating on a single player. Duke has some bangers down low as well and that physical play could be helpful in the tournament.
