Suicide Bomber Kills at least 124 in Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s Return to Pakistan

After an eight year self-imposed exile former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto returned to Pakistan and the celebration turned deadly as the motorcade she was traveling in was struck by an explosion that killed at least 124 people who were marking her homecoming.

With details still uncertain, there is a belief that the explosion was set off by a suicide bomber and, in fact, there were actually two bombs that caused the carnage.

Bhutto, who was traveling in a bullet and blast-proof vehicle, survived the attack that left more than 320 injured.

Many of those killed in the blast were policemen who had been assigned to surround the truck in which the controversial former PM was traveling in. The thought of a woman leader in a traditional Muslim nation has incensed many in the faith and the threat of an attack was something those in Bhutto’s party, the People’s Party, had feared.

Bhutto had returned to Pakistan after reaching an agreement with President Pervez Musharraf that would allow her to seek re-election
