Max McGee, Green Bay Packers Super Bowl Hero, Dies in Accident

Max McGee, the answer to one of the most commonly asked trivia questions in all of sports, died on Saturday after falling from the roof of his house. McGee was 75.

It was McGee who scored the first touchdown in Super Bowl history when he caught a Bart Starr pass and went 37-yards for the score as Green Bay went on to beat Kansas City 35-10. McGee finished with seven receptions for 138 yards and added another touchdown in the 1967 contest.

As legend goes McGee was never supposed to appear in the game but Packers coach Vince Lombardi was forced to insert him after starting receiver Boyd Dowler was injured on Green Bay’s second drive.

McGee was an unlikely hero for the Packers that day as he had collected just four receptions during the entire 1966 season leading up to the Super Bowl.
