Sri Lanka has extended the current state of emergency across the island in an effort to maintain peace and possibly detain terror suspects ahead of next month’s legislative elections.
While the government has said the move to extend the state of emergency was being done to thwart any remnants of Tamil Tiger rebels opposition to the move has claimed the move was made to silence the media as well as those opposed to the government.
Under the emergency laws authorities are allowed to detain terror suspects for an indefinite period without ever leveling a charge.
