San Diego fires kill one, injures 12

Fire officials say the only thing that may stop the fire spreading across California is the Pacific Ocean, and they say the fire is only going to get worse. An estimated quarter-million people were forced to flee their homes in San Diego County after Santa Ana winds pushed the Witch fire across the northern portion of the county.

The Witch fire has spread across 10,000 acres. “It’s going to get worse. It’s probably the worst fire this county has ever had, well worse than the cedar fire,” says Sheriff Bill Kolender.

As of mid Monday one person was confirmed dead and 12 others injured. Four of the 12 were firefighters; three in critical condition and one in fair condition.

“I think there’s a very good possibility it will reach the coast before it’s finished,” said Chief of North County Fire Protection District Bill Metcalf.
