At SuperCamp, a 7-day or 10-day summer enrichment program that teaches life, leadership, and academic skills to kids and teens, paradigm shifts are worth much more than just 20 cents. They are priceless skills that encourage and empower students to take the risk of moving outside their comfort zones into an environment filled with opportunity and learning.
Each one of us comes with a comfort zone that is constantly expanding and contracting with people and activities we feel comfortable with, such as friends and family, brushing our teeth, and favorite foods and places. Many of us, especially students, tend to stay inside our comfort zones because they are easy, familiar, and yes, comfortable. Everything outside of them may seem way too risky, challenging, or dangerous.
As with anything too comfortable, our comfort zone can become boring and stagnant. If we stay in there long enough, we run the risk of having our comfort zones shrink in around us, and forcing us into a personal rut. With the right encouragement however, students at the academic summer camps learn to slowly peek their heads out, like a meerkat pup out of its burrow, and venture out into what is called the “Learning Zone.” Despite their internal voice screaming at them, “Don’t go out there!” SuperCamp participants learn to take those powerful steps even though they feel weird and shaky. They soon find that their discomfort subsides and their comfort zone has expanded!
By moving out of their comfort zone in a safe and supportive environment, students at SuperCamp learn that experiencing things that are new creates an astounding amount of learning and growth. When a student’s comfort zone expands, parents are pleased to see that not only does their learning and curiosity increase, but the child’s maturity does as well; not to mention their self-confidence, courage, and even their grades in school.
SuperCamp has been encouraging students to step outside their comfort zone since 1982. With over 50,000 students having already accepted the challenge, SuperCamp continues to support improved learning and life skills in students from all 50 states and from over 30 countries. Today, SuperCamp is hosted on nine college campuses across the country including sites at
