Israel Commemorates 12th Anniversary of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin Assassination

It has been 12 years since Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was gunned down at a Tel Aviv rally and members of his family were scheduled to meet with President Shimon Peres for a candle lighting ceremony conducted at his residence.

Peres was a foreign minister and had been at the 1995 rally when Yigal Amir shot Rabin three times in the back. Amir, a right-wing radical, had opposed Rabin’s signing of the Oslo Accords.

It was Rabin’s efforts, along with Peres and former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in crafting the Oslo Accords that earned the trio the Nobel peace prize in 1994. The accords were designed to foster peace efforts between Israelis and Palestinians.

Current Prime Minister Ehud Olmert will mark the occasion on Wednesday when he attends a graveside ceremony at the Mount Harzl cemetery.
