U.S. VP Joe Biden Accuses Israel of Undermining Peace Process with Palestinians

U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden has been outspoken concerning Israel’s recent announcement that they would move forward with the construction of some 1,600 Jewish homes in the West Bank, saying the decision could jeopardize the peace process with Palestinians.

Biden said “the decision by the Israeli government to advance planning for new housing units in East Jerusalem undermines that very trust - the trust that we need right now in order to begin as well as produce profitable negotiations.” While Israel had pledged to freeze settlement construction in the West Bank they have said on a number of occasions that East Jerusalem was not part of that agreement.

That contention has angered Palestinians who have already said a future Palestinian state would recognize East Jerusalem as its capital. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas demanded Israel halt the new construction and said there would be no peace talks as long as the building project continued.

Biden is currently in the Middle East to jumpstart the peace process between the two sides but  those talks already appear dead in the water as Israel has refused to back away from their decision.
