President Barack Obama is using a stop in Missouri Wednesday morning to announce a new plan to aggressively go after fraud in Medicare and Medicaid programs. The White House said the President will announce a plan to offer auditors a financial incentive to double-check what is known as medical payments from Washington. These checks will be called "payment recapture audits." The problem stems from payments that are often made to the wrong people, according to a White House statement.
“The fact is, Washington is a place where tax dollars are often treated like Monopoly money, bartered and traded, divvied up among lobbyists and special interests. And it has been a place where waste -- even billions of dollars in waste – is accepted as the price of doing business,” said Obama in St. Charles. “Well, I don’t accept business as usual." "And the American people don’t accept it either."
The White House said the president signed an Executive Order Wednesday to implement the program. Obama is also supporting a bill co-sponsored by Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill and others called the "Improper Payment Elimination and Recovery Act." It would broaden the scope of the audits already in place.
