UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Requests IPCC Work be Reviewed by World’s Science Academies

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has responded to the controversy surrounding reports published the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) by requesting the world’s science academies review those reports concerning climate science.

Those reviews will be coordinated by the Inter-Academy Council which will bring together a panel of experts to examine the findings. While the IPCC has said they stand firmly behind their 3,000 page report there have been a number of errors discovered, leaving many to question the accuracy of the document published in 2007.

Ban Ki-moon said he wanted “to ensure full transparency, accuracy and objectivity” by having the report reviewed but made it clear “the threat posed by climate change is real.” He also said he had seen no credible evidence that challenged the main conclusion of the IPCC’s 2007 report.

The Inter-Academy Council has already said they will not be looking for additional errors in the report but rather make suggestions about how the procedures of the IPCC can be improved to avoid future errors.
