Boeing Co. (NYSE:BA) will pay the retired chief of its commercial airplane division $1.5 million to work as a consultant for two years, a paycheck that works out to $850 an hour.

Scott Carson had been chief executive of Boeing Commercial Airplanes for about three years when Boeing said in August that he would retire as of the end of the year after some 38 years in the aerospace business. His retirement came as Boeing shook up the division that was late in producing its new 787, although many of the trouble spots predated Carson's time there.

Boeing's filing with the SEC on Wednesday said Carson would provide services based on "your extensive and unique knowledge and experience with Boeing's commercial airplane business, including your extensive relationships with Boeings customers and suppliers." The agreement caps Carson's work at 75 hours per month and runs from Friday through March 12, 2012. Expenses are paid separately.
