Man sues Westboro Baptist Church for protesting at soldier’s funeral

The father of a fallen solider is suing Westboro Baptist Church for holding an anti-gay protest at his sons funeral. Albert Snyder says the demonstration made him “sick to his stomach and gave him nightmares.”

Snyder’s son, Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, was killed in Iraq in March 2006. Snyder has filed a lawsuit against the church alleging that violated his family’s right to privacy and defamed his son and family.

Westboro Baptist Church have picketed at the funeral of fallen soldiers in the past claiming their deaths are punishment for America’s tolerance to lesbian and gays. The church also operates GodHatesFags.com and GodHatesAmerica.com.

Snyder testified the church turned his son’s funeral into a “media circus.” “They wanted their message heard and they didn’t care who they stepped over. My son should have been buried with dignity, not with a bunch of clowns outside,” he said.

The Topeka, Kansas based church has 70 members, which is mostly made up of Reverend Fred Phelps’ family members. The Westboro Baptist Church is not affiliated with any national Baptist group, and is believed to be a cult.
